Commentary

The Lisbon to Cape Town 2024 sailing race saw 124 sailors embarking on time for this timeless oceanic challenge. This route perennially presents the pivotal decision of whether to chart an eastern or western course. About a week into the race, the verdict was cast: the majority favoured the westerly route, while approximately 40% of the fleet opted for the African coastal passage.

The group navigating along the rhumb line of the African coast surged ahead for nearly three weeks, holding a steady lead until day 27 when the western contingent caught up, leaving only about 600 NM to go. Interestingly, the western group, once trailing by as much as 350 NM on day 21, dispersed along the route, stretching their formation to a frontline spanning over 300 NM. In contrast, the eastern group remained more tightly knit.

On day 27, the western group found themselves converging once more, yet maintaining separate positions by nearly 100 NM. This scenario prompted a subsequent split, with competitors from position 5 onwards charting an entirely divergent course from the frontrunners, earning them the moniker "southerners". Among the frontrunners, the ranking was largely established, except for the intense battle for the gold medal. This contest oscillated back and forth within the final 36 hours of the race, culminating in the solidification of the podium standings approximately 16 hours before the finish line.

The ”southerners” did not gain or lose much on their move, ending up same positions and distances as prior to the ‘move’. The winner of the eastern group finished #40 36hours behind the winner. Significant for this race was that all, in the western group, took their own distinct cource. If some followed or covered anybody else, it only happened for a short period of time.

Mangalia to Sevastopol 2024

This time the Black Sea challenges us in a race on the 360 Nm route from Mangala to Sevastopol. On the way we will also visit Odessa. Watch out for the legendary pirates and their fast battle galleys. Nobody ever found them. Apparently they took them with them to the land and hid them in the forests. Let's hope that our Delphia 47 will be fast enough to escape the chase, otherwise we may end up in captivity.
