An early season tropical 'something' in the central Gulf could make this choice interesting?
  • Re: Mark Boat Rounding Rules - Proposal for discussion
    Board » Practice Racing
Practice races are an 'Extra', and we are all grateful for the support that we get from SOL.

We do NOT want to change the established 'real race' program!

There are things about Practice Race Mark setting that you don't consider. Some people have to abandon and sail on untended.

"Right" and realistic, or not. we need a beach to catch them. Other things come into play too.

The bottom line is that this is FUN, and a chance to learn, and help new SOLers. It will never be a cutthroat championship.

If a Penalty is determined, I like the idea of the boat turning to the nearest Cardinal Direction to its present heading, then immediately on seeing the change, turning to the reciprocal of that, ...and then resuming racing.

That guarantees the max perf hit.

(...to be taken at any time before the Finish. Boats burdened by land may not be able to take it immediately.)

Anything else but a penalty at the sailor's choice of time, destroys a boat that is on DC.

I think the whole subject is more intensity than we need to get involved with,

After all, this is a fun race, not the America's Cup, (with lawyers.)

Rounding the Central Dot of a Mark, is fine. ...or rounding a designated island without grounding.

If an SLI is jumped, assume a high tide!
  • Re: Windward/leward olympic triangle

The problem with Triangle-Windward-Leeward-Windward, (later 12m AC course,) is that the legs overlap and make the course too hard to see.

Real races physically moved the Windward Mark to adjust while they were in progress.

My greatest coup in journalism, was one AC Defender's Trial when I recognized this. We only had a dozen spectator boats anywhere near us at the Finish. :)

Is there any chance of becoming an 'official' sidebar to the real Barcelona World?

If so, replace the other one!

I see way too much server load looming!

Naming of the Slave Race' is too explosive to use. That is a very political subject over here, and I could see that blowing up in our face, with major news media bashing SOL.

Instead, for a Clipper Ship race. How about a 'Goldfield's Run', circa 1849.

This can be NY around the Horn to SFO, or...two races. NY-Panama, then Panama to Frisco?

Days 4-5 have been well described!

Suffice to say both Group North and Group South are nervous with every update.

"Georgette" could step onstage anytime and change everything!

GibneyJr owned the paper Lead until recently, when Lakis took the point.

More boats are clumped near the Rhumb Line than before, but the stalwarts are sticking to plan, North and South.

Jeba is already at 11.7n but far west. The clump between 12.5-13.6, includes Spackel, 76T, Malicovvv, and Windegg.

    Day 3, September 8

More of the same. The northern and southern boats are wondering just how far is 'too far', while the bulk of the fleet tries to tack eastwards between the two groups,

76T continues as the southernmost boat. Meanwhile the top six "Ranking" positions are now Southerners.

    Day 2, September 7
Wake up saw the Southern boats spread out some, in my case from a slight shift as I slept.

Another dozen boats have joined close behind from the North Group.

76T, (on DCs ?), is farthest south at 18.1n 152.5w. Lakis (p.16 overall,) is the northern outlier of Group South at 19.2n 152.4w.

Others are between those or a little behind.

Disregarding 'Rankings' Malicovvv seems to lead the Group.

The northern group is splitting tacks, and fighting less wind from a difficult direction.

    Day 1, September 6, 2010
When the gun fired at 1800z, all but about a dozen boats headed north, around Maui and out to sea.

The Daring Dozen went through the channel between Maui and the Big Island and headed SE.

Gibney Jr, Rod, Lakis, Fr Do Ping, Swe54, Ghibli, Viking, Spackel, Malikovvv, newsartist, 76Trombones, and Dutchboy were in the Southern Group.

DiBilbao Pues roared around the north of Maui and caught the others with a better angle.

Other boats from both groups seemed to reconsider and attempted to join the other group before Midnight.
