28 February 2018

Sailonline is delighted to announce that, we will again be partnering with the prestigious San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) for the 2018 running of the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta Race. SDYC has been racing in the waters off San Diego for 130yrs, and in 2016, was the first USA West Coast yacht club to bring virtual sailing navigation to its members and the west coast sailing community.

Originally created in 1953 by Commodore Ken Baker in partnership with the Club de Yates de Acapulco, this race was sailed from San Diego to Acapulco; a 1430 nautical mile course that yachts of the era took up to 14 days to complete. Part of the early popularity of the Acapulco Race was to lure the returning American racers to the incredibly scenic cruising waters and ports of the emerging Mexican Rivera between Acapulco and Cabo San Lucas. In 1976, with people’s leisure time shrinking and because the latter third of the race was often sailed in lighter winds, the race finish was shortened to Las Hadas, some 300 miles to the north. At this time, our Club de Yates de Acapulco friends thought it would be great to take advantage of our presence in their waters and start a regional weeklong event of day racing combining the fleets of the Mexican Rivera with our Southern Californian participants. The Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit, or MEXORC as it has become known, has since flourished and always follows the finish of the SDYC race. It is the crown jewel of Mexican regattas and is a key enhancement to today’s Vallarta Race.

Sailonline will be going head to head with the real fleet – it is intended to bring the tracks of the real racers on-screen – and as we are racing our Santa Cruz 52 polar, there are two direct competitors in the current Entry List – Lucky Duck and Triumph. Sailonline's race is now open for pre-race practice.

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
