Commentary

This was the second of five races in this year’s Tall Ships Series and the second of the two races in the The Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta where Sailonline partners with Sail Training International.

Our start, stated to be Dublin, was in fact offshore Waterford on Ireland’s SE coast, and gave us a direct, almost line-of-sight, run to Bordeaux. Line of sight, but for the tremendous volume of sea traffic navigating the English Channel/La Manche that spills over into the waters S of Ireland and NW of France. The Bay of Biscay, famed for its storms and wild condition, was as meek as a lamb and we found ourselves truly testing our Clipper polar to make progress. Needless to say, several SOLers were more than competent and, for a tall ships race, to see so many arriving within one hour of the first finisher was impressive.

Congratulations to our podium three for their early arrival at the Bordeaux Wine Festival – some of us further back in the fleet were glad to find you had left some good wines for the rest of us! Bravo!

Current Races:

SWR 17/18 Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague
Then we've made it to Gothenburg.
And with the experience that The North Sea can be just as rough as the Southern Pacific.
Ok, it's time for sailing our final leg to The Hague, with a little detour around the Danish city of Aarhus, a so-called "fly-by".
And beware – the North Sea can still be very tricky, so fair winds to you all.

Sail Fiji 2018
Welcome to Sail Fiji 2018.
This time there will be no RAYC IRL fleet to beat, so we have the 1144nm from New Zealand to Fiji ahead of us, in our "old" Volvo Ocean racer, the VO70v4, completely to ourselves.
The time set in 2016 was a little under 66½ hours, done by "outlaw".
We can do better this time, can't we?
