Sailonline would like to thank San Diego Yacht Club for letting us share in the experience of the 2018 Vallarta Race. Boats flying the flags of 36 nations took part and we saw a contingent of 35 USA flagged boats – an excellent turnout!

Racing in the waters off San Diego is always a joy and to combine our time in California with a run to Mexico for this year’s Vallarta Race was particularly special. The waters are pretty familiar for SOLers who have participated in one of Sailonline’s Gray Whale epic races, but the experience of sailing in competition with the real fleet lent an extra edge to the event! Racing our Santa Cruz 52 polar, we would have been in Division 5 in the real race, especially as can be seen from this pic, by 18 March both fleets were well mixed in with each other – although Mighty Merloe, an ORMA60, raced well in front to set a new course record, trimming about 4 hrs off the old one!

This time Division 5 had four Santa Cruz yachts racing – two 50s and two 52s. The first home in the Division was SC50 Horizon in a corrected time of 5d4h15m38s and the first SC52, Lucky Duck had a corrected time of 5d13h11m39s which means that our virtual winner , Sadlersailing, would have been placed second in the Division with a finishing time of 5d9h39m35s!! You’ve gotta love how the sophistication of our platform can truly keep us in touch with actuality!

Congratulations then to the real finishers and especially to our excellent podium – all three arriving within minutes of each other. Bravo, guys!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
