10 February 2019

Sailonline is delighted to once again be buddying with the Short-handed Sailing Association of New Zealand (SSANZ) for the Round New Zealand race 2019. When we last raced anti-clockwise round both of New Zealand’s islands with SSANZ back in 2012, it was the first time the real race had been run for 22 years! The race in 2012 was immensely challenging for the real racers with some almost impossible conditions encountered in Leg 2. The race this time is again in four legs, following the previous route:

Leg 1 – Auckland to Mangonui (160nm)
Leg 2 – Mangonui to Stewart Island (920nm)
Leg 3 – Stewart Island to Napier (620nm)
Leg 4 – Napier to Auckland (320nm)

The Tracker

Leg 1 of the race will start at 0100utc on Saturday,16 February and each subsequent leg of the real race will start in accordance with the formula set out in the Sailing Instructions , namely:

“At a time set by the Race Committee during the Compulsory Stopover. (i) Mangonui 24 hours minimum after the 75% boat finishes (ii) Stewart Island 72 hours minimum after the 75% boat finishes (iii) Napier 48 hours minimum after the 75% boat finishes.
There will be a mass start for each leg at a convenient time set by the Race Committee soon after 75% of the fleet have fulfilled the stopover duration.”

PLEASE NOTE: Sailonline will be competing as closely as is virtually possible with the real yachts and will be aiming to give a minimum of 24hrs notice of a start time. It is intended to close each leg promptly, in harmony with the real race, but we hope to give some allowance here. As always, your ranking for each leg will be your position at leg close.

Christmas to Christmas Island 2025

Two waypoints, start and finish, and between them 5827 NM of two oceans. Not much time if we want to sit at the Christmas Eve table. You will need to maintain an average speed of over 10 knots, maybe quite possible with this Maxi Trimaran, but prepare your vessel well and choose the best of the many possible routes. Hands up everyone who knew there were TWO Christmas Islands?! OK, maybe you have sailed this Sailonline course before... but it's time to get ready for the 2025 challenge of racing between Christmas Island in the Pacific to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! It also marks the conclusion of our prestigious Ocean Race Championship 2025. Please have fun! Fair winds!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
