Commentary

It seems a long, long time ago – another age – that we set off virtually, together with the real life racing fleet, from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta, under the auspices of the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC). Light, variable winds to the horizon and beyond forced our keenest racers to time and again hunt for breeze under the coast, skirting myriads of islands and headlands to gain whatever advantage they might. The progress was slow, and every now and then a new forecast caused them dramatically to change course. Others took it more leisurely, imagining they were enjoying the early spring sunshine as they ambled southward to the Mexican riviera.

But, after more than seven days at sea, there had to be a winner, appropriately enough on this occasion hailing from the US of A, and indeed a first first on sailonline as well. A relative newcomer to sailonline, but obviously not to online yacht racing and routing, Starship, for it was her/she/him/he, in another race running concurrently was heard to wonder at his competitors dedication and ability to stay in the vanguard on two oceans at once, although, if you check our ocean race fleet approaching Cape Town, you'll find he hasn't done that badly so far on the Atlantic either. Welcome and well done Starship!

Lisbon to Cape Town 2020
Our third OCC race in Q1 is also our first race of a special 4-race RTW series. Given that this leg 1 is taking us on a more than 5000nm passage from Lisbon to Cape Town, the betting has to be that the subsequent legs will be into the wind. Hopefully not in replicas of Ellen McArthurs Orange catamaran then!
