GOOD ONYA Kipper1258!!!

Race Leaderboard

Our race invitation this time, as so often, was very beguiling

“Welcome to the legendary Pillars of Hercules and a TIMED race that starts in the Atlantic Ocean and finishes in the Mediterranean Sea, some 48nm away. This should be a brilliantly competitive affair in our X-332s.”

But however enticing the description, sweeping us away from the cold reality of competitive racing, the truth of the matter is that to do well in a TIMED race you really do need to spend some time reviewing upcoming weather, because although you can race a course again, as often as you like, so long as you complete a previous run, you need to pick the likely fastest option so as not to miss it. You can do this very easily on-screen by sliding the wx slider forward and, as a ballpark, can identify when the course sees the optimal winds for the boat we are racing. Some SOLers do spend time running the course through routing software but, with 7-day wind forecasts, even without using a router you can get a sense of when, in the upcoming days, will be a good time to start and do well, as our podium this time demonstrates.

Congratulations then to our podium this time – starting on the same day, within 20mins of each other – their podium-place-taking times were only 7 seconds apart. Well raced, guys!

SoCal 300 2020

The SoCal 300, raced in the waters of California on the US West Coast is usually one of San Diego Yacht Club's most challenging races meaning that we have our work cut out for us to be competitive in our Santa Cruz 52s. This year, due to #COVID19 the real race won't be running which means that some of the real competition may well find their way to race against us in virtuality!
