Commentary
For the ninth time Sailonline’s fleet has followed the migration route of the NE Pacific gray whales and all but three of them have seen us undertake the autumn migration from the northern feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to the warm waters of the breeding grounds off Mexico. This time, we were back in our much loved 90ft Monohull which, with the Super Maxi 100, has proved the boat of choice for these migration races.

The race, hugging the coastline, like the whales, naturally divides into three sections. First, from the Bering Sea, round the chain of the Aleutian Islands to Middleton Island, second, still coast hugging to California and then an ocean run to Mexico. The marine environment was already in great danger when we raced here a year ago and, sadly, the arrival of the global pandemic has seen a huge increase in marine pollution – sights of seabirds and marine life trapped in the ear-loops of disposable masks, piles of discarded PPE in the water and washed up on shores – and the latest word that it is believed #COVID19, a mammalian virus, may well transmit to ocean mammals via direct-to-ocean sewer outflows. The message we have to pick up from this is for mankind to engage with keeping our environment as safe for our blue planet and its creatures as possible.

Congratulations go to our 2020 podium who, arriving at the front of a fleet flying the flags of 40 nations, arrived within of each other, and our winner recorded the speediest time ever for this N-S run of 12d 08h 19m, shaving 17hrs off the previous best time logged in 2016. Nicely done, guys!

Natuna Sea Race 2026

At 4.0N 108.2E lies the island of Natuna Besar, Great Natuna, surrounded by at least 154 islands, of which 127 uninhabited, Indonesia’s Natuna Regency, and all around this archipelago, the Natuna Sea, bordered by Borneo to the east, the Java Sea to the south, and the Malay peninsula to the west, and extending north to cross a disputed international border with China into the South China Sea. And it’s a border that matters, there’s gas here! But why worry, let’s race – 2050nm in our goo’ol’ Open 60s in between the production platforms, prowling destroyers and submarines.
