UPDATE: 23APR11: CONGRATULATIONS to Open Country. This just in from Wairua:
"Open Country 1st on IRC Handicap! ...Open Country crossed the finish line at 04:51:23 UTC after a very long and tiring race... There were moments of brilliance - followed by hours of despair - as we hunted for the breeze"

and here is his all-woman crew - well done ladies!! ***********************************

Congratulations to SOL's finishers!! WINSTON_4 (ITA) in 19h41m18s - GnT (AUS) in 19h42m07s and ita10267 (ITA) in 19h42m14s.

UPDATE: 21APR11@1640utc: The SOL fleet leaders are shortly going to be making the turn into Tauranga Harbour and will be happily kicking back enjoying bacon butties as the rest of us follow them in! The IRL boats are also making good progress after horribly light winds at the start. Check out the arrival in reality, once its light of course, on the Tauranga Harbour Webcam.
Crew.org has some xcellent photos/videos of the IRL race start here.
UPDATE: 21APR11@0815utc: The SOL fleet is making good progress as it didn't have tides/currents to contend with, and the leaders are only 70nm from the finish. In addition to the two trackers on board SOLer's boats linked below, Team Vodafone Sailing also has a live tracker, and a link to this plus a report on her race is available from LuvMyBoat.com. *****************************

Its time for another fine New Zealand race - this time organised by the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club who are happy for SOL to race the course under the official name. Thank you TYPBC!!

There is no written history of the real race but Crew.org has found out that it was definitely first sailed in 1923 when it was called the Auckland Tauranga Ocean Race and then raced every year until 1930. Including these races, up to the present day, the race has been run a total of 42 times. The 2011 running will therefore be the 43rd running.

SOLer NZL_WairuaExpress will again be racing his yacht, Open Country, and we are expecting to see her pop up on our race screens, but otherwise she is trackable via her own SpiderTrack.

SOLer NZL_yachtyakka will be on board Crac-a-Jac and their progress can be tracked via their SPOT Tracker.

The real race will also have an unofficial participant this year - a classic 106yr old 34ft keel yacht, Wairiki, that actually competed in the first recorded 1923 Auckland Tauranga race!! The full story is available here..

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Cocos to Sagar Island

Kapil Muni, incarnation of Lord Vishnu, founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy, disturbed from his meditation, in his wrath reduced the 60,000 sons of Sagar to ashes, as they dug the earth to retrieve the sacrificial horse that Lord Indra, the king of the Gods, stole off Sagar, thus creating the Sagara (ocean). Aeons later, Bhagiratha, a descendant of Sagara, asked Ganga to cleanse the ashes of the 60,000 princes, and her resultant torrential fall from heaven created the great river and where it met the ocean, the princes’ souls were washed and raised to heaven and Gangasagar (Sagar Island) was formed. So, let us join the pilgrimages to Kapi Muni’s Temple (see above) and race 2400nm from Cocos Island deep in the Sagara thence, in rather rapid Rapido 60s.

The Vineyard Race 2026

For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!
