In 1989, a group of widely differing boats set off from Southampton, England, on the first leg of the Whitbread Round the World Race. The race was to prove to be a resounding success for Peter Blake and yacht Steinlager 2, an 84ft ketch, although one of the smallest boats in the fleet, Tracy Edwards' Maiden, a 58ft sloop, crewed by the first ever all-female round-the-world crew, did pretty well too!

Thanks to SOLer WetWing, Sailonline’s database includes the polar of Steinlager 2 so as part of the Sailonline Ocean Championship 2014, the Sailonline Race Committee has decided to include all six legs of the 1989/1990 Whitbread Round the World Race.

The legs are:

1. Southampton, England – Punta del Este, Uruguay
2. Punta del Este, Uruguay – Fremantle, Australia
3. Fremantle, Australia – Auckland, New Zealand
4. Auckland, New Zealand – Punta del Este, Uruguay
5. Punta del Este, Uruguay – Fort Lauderdale, USA
6. Fort Lauderdale, USA – Southampton, England

To make starts DC-able, Sailonline’s Race Committee has made minor adjustments to the real start and finish points – the idea is to provide a clean ocean-racing competition (after all, there are no onshore spectators to appease!).

This will be a magnificent opportunity for SOLers of all ages, not only to recreate a little bit of yachting’s history, but, perhaps, to try and beat the amazing records set by Peter Blake and Steinlager in the original race! Tell everyone to come and recapture yachting history on Sailonline!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Cocos to Sagar Island


Kapil Muni, incarnation of Lord Vishnu, founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy, disturbed from his meditation, in his wrath reduced the 60,000 sons of Sagar to ashes, as they dug the earth to retrieve the sacrificial horse that Lord Indra, the king of the Gods, stole off Sagar, thus creating the Sagara (ocean). Aeons later, Bhagiratha, a descendant of Sagara, asked Ganga to cleanse the ashes of the 60,000 princes, and her resultant torrential fall from heaven created the great river and where it met the ocean, the princes’ souls were washed and raised to heaven and Gangasagar (Sagar Island) was formed. So, let us join the pilgrimages to Kapi Muni’s Temple (see above) and race 2400nm from Cocos Island deep in the Sagara thence, in rather rapid Rapido 60s.

SSANZ Triple Series 2026 - Race 3

Welcome to the grand finale of this year's SSANZ Triple Series! The stage is set for the Lewmar 50, a thrilling 40nm challenge tracing the southern shores of the stunning Waiheke Island, pushing out to Tarahiki before the sprint back to Islington Bay. Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Shearwater - Rio de la Plata to Irish Sea 2026

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
