The second race of the 2014 TIMED Race Championship got off to a relatively slow start - there were few opportunities for optimal runs throughout the week. However, word spread that there would be a good window on 28 January and it was from the afternoon runs on this day that our three podium winners achieved success! Well done guys

Race Notes from karriv
Right from the start it was clear that the weather varied very much from wx to wx, so I decided to try to take advantage of any opportunity arising. The first came on late Saturday evening (Finland time =UTC+2), with another coming early Sunday morning, the latter seeming more advantageous. In the end the Saturday window was not very popular, just a few SOLers, I managed to set a good time, and the next wx closed the Sunday morning window.

The real window came on Tuesday evening. After spending a way too long evening with Up Helly Aa on Monday (I set 10 carefully calculated DCs and ended up BBQing about 23 minutes after going to bed, practically at the first available beach;) and waking early Tuesday to work I almost skipped the window. Fortunately I decided to race after all;) This time the course was packed with boats, almost everyone starting between 14 and 16 UTC. I started a bit later than majority of the fleet. From the start I was thinking that the race would be decided on who rounds the marks best. I did marginal errors at Vuelta 2 and 3, took a small risk at Vuelta 4 which paid off nicely. After Vuelta 4 I got my first fairly accurate estimate of my time. After that it was very exciting to see the times set by boats ahead of me. After crossing the line the excitement was almost unbearable as estimating times for arriving boats was extremely difficult.

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Cocos to Sagar Island


Kapil Muni, incarnation of Lord Vishnu, founder of the Samkhya school of philosophy, disturbed from his meditation, in his wrath reduced the 60,000 sons of Sagar to ashes, as they dug the earth to retrieve the sacrificial horse that Lord Indra, the king of the Gods, stole off Sagar, thus creating the Sagara (ocean). Aeons later, Bhagiratha, a descendant of Sagara, asked Ganga to cleanse the ashes of the 60,000 princes, and her resultant torrential fall from heaven created the great river and where it met the ocean, the princes’ souls were washed and raised to heaven and Gangasagar (Sagar Island) was formed. So, let us join the pilgrimages to Kapi Muni’s Temple (see above) and race 2400nm from Cocos Island deep in the Sagara thence, in rather rapid Rapido 60s.

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
