The race from Newport RI to Bermuda has to be one of the classic races for all yachties. Raced in reality by several SOLers across the years, this race saw the active participation of BER_Baggus on board Nasty Medicine, while other SOLers had chums racing. Because the organisers of the real race had an excellent tracker, we could keep an eye on the real fleet and see how they coped with the extraordinary bands of "blue gloop" (windholes) that crossed the paths of both the virtual and the real fleet.

It has been a long time since a line of windholes truly shut the door on a following fleet of SOLers but it has occurred off E Coast USA before, during a TransAt from Newport to Plymouth several years ago. When it happens it really feels like a slap in the face from those who have sailed more cannily and traversed the obstacle better or even avoided it altogether. One can but say "Chapeau" to our podium three who traversed in style. Congratulations!

To help us identify where we went wront, we can now not only compare our tracks on hmm's SOL Race Data Centre but we can now read insights from our podium three - thanks guys!

Mad Max by Balloon 2026 - Across the Outback

Mad Max Rockatansky doesn’t get to go in a balloon in any of the Legends of the Wasteland, and the Wasteland is not necessarily the Outback of Australia, but Mel Gibson and film director George Miller indubitably are… of Australia, and ballooning as reconnaissance is a main feature of the Mad Max spin-off video game, so here goes: 1500nm in a balloon from somewhere on the edge of the Outback, Goondiwindi, to cross a finish line at Fitzroy Crossing, somewhere on the edge of the Outback!
