Commentary
Sailonline’s Clipper ships race from Bermuda to the Boston Tall Ships Finish started on the scheduled day. Unfortunately for the real fleet, wind/weather conditions in the Atlantic meant that they had to stay in Bermuda a little longer, with the foiling America’s Cup yachts at the other end of the island making a great counterpoint. Sailing virtual tall ships, however, meant that the Sailonline fleet could set off into the teeth of gales and as a consequence found the first finishers arriving at the offshore race finish mark in less than two days! The real fleet started some days later and will be noting their finishing times as they pass the official finishing line on their way to E Coast USA where, ultimately, a warm Boston welcome awaits them for the festival there.

Congratulations to our podium of tall ships skippers – to see our top finishers use different strategies gives hope to the rest of us that we don’t all have to “follow the leader”!! Bravo guys!!

Mad Max by Balloon 2026 - Across the Outback

Mad Max Rockatansky doesn’t get to go in a balloon in any of the Legends of the Wasteland, and the Wasteland is not necessarily the Outback of Australia, but Mel Gibson and film director George Miller indubitably are… of Australia, and ballooning as reconnaissance is a main feature of the Mad Max spin-off video game, so here goes: 1500nm in a balloon from somewhere on the edge of the Outback, Goondiwindi, to cross a finish line at Fitzroy Crossing, somewhere on the edge of the Outback!
