Commentary
Originally proposed to Sailonline some years ago as a partner race to the real-life race from Pensacola to Mexico, the absence of currents in-game meant that the real race organisers at the time lost interest. The race was never run, until Sailonline was again reminded of it and our Race Committee chose to put it into our calendar. At first sight, after departing Pensacola, the straight-to-finish rhumbline gave the lie to the complexity of the course as the fleet scattered across the Gulf of Mexico. The washing-machine style of wind circulation in conditions that were already light and shifty meant that it was a beautifully difficult race and really engaged all who participated. Whether you were back in the fleet or at the front, there was always a sense of being in the race! Let’s hope we race this course again before too long.

The extraordinary romp to the line by our winner, LastCall276, who arrived 42 minutes ahead of everyone else is deserving of special mention. LastCall was racing in his back yard but he had mentioned in chat, at the beginning of our race, that in the real race the fleet tends to steer E. As the currents in the Gulf of Mexico are known to be notoriously tricky, and Sailonline is only racing in wind conditions, this as-it-proved most helpful comment was noted but not truly understood!

Congratulations to all three on our podium – to be the first ever on the podium of a new Sailonline race is pretty special, and to be on a podium in any race is a considerable achievement. Well done guys!

Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Shearwater - Rio de la Plata to Irish Sea 2026

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
