Commentary
When Sailonline’s New Hebrides Slalom course was first raced in 2013 the name caused a little confusion as many racers thought to find themselves off the W coast of Scotland, but instead this race is set among the islands of the modern republic of Vanuatu in Melanesia. It is rare for the average yachtie to have a chance to get up close and personal with a Pacific island group, but the world is always at your fingertips with Sailonline!

For a second time this race was incorporated into the 40ft Championship series and so boat choice, from among those on offer in this year's series, was always going to make a big difference. From the off, the Farr 400 showed off its performance with its first finisher arriving 15 hours ahead of the first boat in the next group, the Ker 40. The first SOTO 40 finished 27hrs behind #1 and the first Class 40 was 35hrs behind #1, but since the Farr can only be used three times during 2018, rest easy – the results will even out along the way.

The Top 10 boats (all Farr 400s) manged to finish this race within 1 hour 45 minutes of each other, and the three podium finishers crossed the line within 21 minutes. The competition gets harder! Well done all!

The stage is set for the Lewmar 50, a thrilling 40nm challenge tracing the southern shores of the stunning Waiheke Island, pushing out to Tarahiki before the sprint back to Islington Bay. Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Shearwater - Rio de la Plata to Irish Sea 2026

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
