Before racing to Noumea from Auckland this year, how many of you could find it with ease in an Atlas or on a globe? Set in the Pacific, the islands of Noumea for some reason have some familiarity for SOLers as we have raced there a few times before, from New Zealand and from Australia. It is fun to realise that there are remote parts of the globe that are better known to us via Sailonline than places in our own countries! The race, almost 1000nm, in TP52s can also give a real sense of how winds and weather from the Southern Oceans come swirling up and into the Pacific where, of course, they mix/mingle with Pacific rim systems.

With the real fleet delayed due to weather (news here) Sailonline this time were trail-blazers for the race, and once past Cape Reinga it was a real run for Noumea. Getting to Cape Reinga, of course, found several SOLers sampling the delights of New Zealand’s North Island E coast and its islands and many best-laid plans foundered here. Boats flying the flags of 32 different nations took part this time but, as ever, only three could take our podium and our three top place-takers come from Australia, Finland and Denmark. Bravo guys!

The stage is set for the Lewmar 50, a thrilling 40nm challenge tracing the southern shores of the stunning Waiheke Island, pushing out to Tarahiki before the sprint back to Islington Bay. Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
