Commentary
Navigating in a race around the world is always a great joy as it was Sailonline’s original design purpose and somehow one can just breathe a sigh of relief to be on our way across the oceans again. For those unfamiliar with ocean navigation, this is the perfect opportunity to hone your skills on probably the best online virtual sailing navigation simulator … for FREE! Whether you like increasing the density of the on-screen wind arrows (see Options under the Info Tab) and using Mark I eyeball to identify your best winds, or whether you are a supremo of routing software, searching for the optimal resource for winds and smoothing them to their closest fit with the Sailonline race, this really is a game for everyone. Old, young, aspiring yotties or legends (in reality and/or virtuality) and especially if you find yourself mostly house- or desk-bound, for whatever reason, this is the time to let your imaginations, and skill, roam the oceans and race!

After a 10-day well earned rest in Hong Kong it was time to set sails again and head for Auckland, New Zealand. Again, we had to face, with justified awe, the famous Doldrums, but before that, shortly after rounding the first mark, a strange thing happened. Most of us headed for Taiwan! After rounding the southern tip of Taiwan, again most of the fleet reacted to the winds by going northeast instead of southwest, heading for Okinawa. And Okinawa became the turning point for going in the "right" direction, towards the Solomon Islands and the Doldrums, which this time showed friendlier than the last time. After getting through, an important choice had to be made; go east or go south? South was apparently the right answer for knockando60. With a giant big curved course in the outer lane, he overtook all competitors and finished first, closely followed by DIKKEHENK and nacrr. Very impressive.

The stage is set for the Lewmar 50, a thrilling 40nm challenge tracing the southern shores of the stunning Waiheke Island, pushing out to Tarahiki before the sprint back to Islington Bay. Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Shearwater - Rio de la Plata to Irish Sea 2026

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
