Commentary
With most of the active online fleet now ome-n-osed in Osaka, the time approaches for SOL to say Sayonara to the Sundance Marine Melbourne Osaka Cup 2018 Double Handed Yacht Race. And what a race it was! A formidable challenge, both IRL and to the online sailors. Excellent reports from the online winner and two of his many competitors, one writing for and on the event website, need little adding to.

Having raced the course twice before, most of the online sailors had the benefit of prior experience. Whether this combined with the IRL fleet having to hand in a week or so waiting for weather (to pass) and thus sailing in different often less favourable conditions, got our winner Billy from Tasmania first of everybody across the line on Saturday 21st at 10:54:29 JST in his strict one-design SOL-tuned Sunfast3600, is debatable. However, an average VMC of 7.4kn over twenty-four long days to beat the IRL line honours winner, Chinese Whisper, a 62ft racing machine from Germany’s venerable Judel Vrolijk design house, was some going, no matter what way you look at it. With IRL sister-ships Kraken, Mister Lucky and Maverick (with SOL’s Roddo & Son on board) set to finish in the next twenty-four hours or so, rests us to raise a glass to them and Billy and indeed all who persevered to finish this marathon of a race! Hip, hip… hurrah, hurrah, hurrah!!

The stage is set for the Lewmar 50, a thrilling 40nm challenge tracing the southern shores of the stunning Waiheke Island, pushing out to Tarahiki before the sprint back to Islington Bay. Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Shearwater - Rio de la Plata to Irish Sea 2026

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
