Commentary
Racing a TransAt is always a heap of fun as the N Atlantic, at any time of year, can prove challenging. These days, with changes in climate impacting ocean winds, traditional crossings aren’t always the quickest any more. This TransAt was set up without much notice following some webserver issues with our originally planned TransAt from Miami to Lisbon. During the course of that race, Sailonline learned of the death of a long standing SOLer, psail, so in his memory we raced one of the courses he designed around Lisbon (all info here) but for many, the setting up of this impromptu TransAt became an opportunity to celebrate Joao’s life, by racing as well as possible. Joao was the epitome of an ocean sailor on Sailonline, relishing the challenges such races hold, particularly as it was for ocean navigation simulation that Sailonline was originally designed.

Unfortunately, yet again during this race, Sailonline’s webserver encountered some problems, and while these didn’t have a major impact on either the race or the finish lineup, it was decided as a matter of policy that the championship rankings for this race would be set aside. For those undeterred by the interruption, as the boats continued sailing on their previously set courses, it was considered a virtual equivalent of a storm damage to steering, and it was excellent to observe the determination to race on to the finish in Plymouth. Many congratulations, then, to our podium for securing the top three spots!

The stage is set for the Lewmar 50, a thrilling 40nm challenge tracing the southern shores of the stunning Waiheke Island, pushing out to Tarahiki before the sprint back to Islington Bay. Expect fast legs, tactical battles, and no shortage of drama as our SOLers take on the waters in their Young 88s, lining up once again against the talented IRL members of the Young 88 Association. With the series on the line and everything still to fight for, it all comes down to this final race!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

Shearwater - Rio de la Plata to Irish Sea 2026

Welcome to the fourth leg of our MIG series. This time we're racing the Sooty Shearwater on their migration from the breeding grounds in South America to the northern Atlantic. New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
