Commentary
Nine years ago, SOLer PerEric proposed a buddy-up race with a difference – instead of with a yacht club, it would be with the hotel that he and his wife had visited for many many years. It was an unusual suggestion but, at the time, the lure of a prize of rum (which could be sent by post then!) together with the idea of our race being promoted on an aparthotel bulletin board was appealing and, so it was, Sailonline first raced this incredible slalom around the Canary Islands – starting and finishing off Playa del Ingles, Gran Canaria, in sight, in reality, of the Santa Monica Hotel itself. Over the years this race has proved supremely challenging and none more so than in 2019 when the running coincided with the sad news of the recent death of a much loved SOLer, psail. Never again will many of us race this Canary Island slalom without remembering João – for some, of course, he is remembered every time they race.

This year, from the start, the leading group in our fleet of 214 boats flying the flags of 41 different nations, seemed to take flight and made extraordinary progress – many stayed in good contact with them, while others found themselves adopting a more cruising profile. By the time our excellent podium reached the finish they had managed to create a few minutes separation from their followers and only 22 boats arrived within the first hour after our winner. CONGRATULATIONS to all and especially our podium three.

Roma per Tutti 2026


Sailonline are honoured and delighted to have been asked to partner an online first Roma per Tutti yacht race with organizing yacht club, Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . In real life, this will be the 33rd edition of this 540nm offshore race from Rome’s Riva di Traiano to the Aeolian Islands and back. Online, the race will not only be our first partnership with CN Riva di Traiano, but also the second race of our Magical Mediterranean series. A number of Mini 6.50s have been entered for the 33rd edition of the Roma per Tutti; so our own vintage Mini is also our virtual yacht of choice for this one.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island. It’s one of the longer ones 6400nm, more than half way around the world (and the Antarctica). It starts the 2026 OCQ2, and will be sailed in our Steinlager 2, contrary to prior notice.
