Commentary

For the 10th season Sailonline is racing virtual tall ships races in association with Sail Training International but this is, of course, the first year when virtual ships are all that are racing. The joy for regular Sailonline racers this time is the participation of crews and skippers from some of the real ships that we only either see on-screen (if Class A ships) or on the YB Tracker. It is apparent that those of us able to experience the real thing really should do so – from the clear camaraderie to the sailing experience itself, it should be on everyone’s “must do” list! This has to have been one of the happiest and most entertaining of all Sailonline’s Tall Ships races, so our thanks go to all those who all who joined us for the first time – we hope you’ll make racing with us a habit!

Our first race between the Tall Ships Festival Cities of Lisbon and Cadiz, with a fleet of virtual Clippers flying the flags of 41 different nations, saw the forecast northerlies giving the initial impression that we’d have the speediest of runs but, as we approached the Beliche Offshore Mark, it became apparent that the wind gods had other plans for us and created a delightfully fickle forecast. A swift glance at a local surfcam revealed blue skies and glorious sunshine, which meant, had we be racing in reality, we’d have been basking in slow and creaking conditions – not really what our Clippers enjoy , but it gave time for the participants from the Rona Sailing Project (boatnames with prefix RSP_) to plan the arrivals party which, if race chat is to be believed, is something that tall ships racing in reality is all about! Another year we’ll have to get them to set up a webcam for us!

The shifting winds meant, of course, that the battle for the podium was fierce indeed with only 32s between 1st and 2nd spot on the podium and a mere 12s between 2nd and 3rd and while the top of the podium was owned by a long standing SOLer, there were two of our new racers occupying the other two places. This was an excellent result for everyone. Many congratulations!

Roma per Tutti 2026

Sailonline are honoured and delighted to have been asked to partner an online first Roma per Tutti yacht race with organizing yacht club, Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . In real life, this will be the 33rd edition of this 540nm offshore race from Rome’s Riva di Traiano to the Aeolian Islands and back. Online, the race will not only be our first partnership with CN Riva di Traiano, but also the second race of our Magical Mediterranean series. A number of Mini 6.50s have been entered for the 33rd edition of the Roma per Tutti; so our own vintage Mini is also our virtual yacht of choice for this one.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island. It’s one of the longer ones 6400nm, more than half way around the world (and the Antarctica). It starts the 2026 OCQ2, and will be sailed in our Steinlager 2, contrary to prior notice.
