Commentary
The second race in the #VTSR2020 (Virtual Tall Ships Races 2020) was, at first glance, likely to be a brief affair. The 125nm run from the festival port of Cadiz to offshore Sagres should, in principle, have been relatively straightforward. Of course, the wind gods had other ideas and created the perfect washing machine effect with mixed winds. In reality, the early almost swim-as-fast winds were a gentle tease before increasing headwinds created a truly challenging affair.

Our fleet again saw participants flying the flags of 41 different nations but it was the start that was most extraordinary. Sailonline is very familiar with a fan-shape in a fleet from the start with boats usually choosing one of two general directions towards a finish line, but this time, with the tricky sailing performance of our Clipper, there literally was a full circle of boats visible on-screen, with even a couple apparently trying to head for Cadiz harbour! Very rapidly, however, a leading group began to take shape and it seemed within a very short time indeed our final winner made a break from this group and maintained a lead from early on. Again our thanks to those crew and Skippers of real tall ships for bringing their expertise to the race.

Congratulations must go to our trio of Tall Ships Captains who took the podium – there was a good group chasing them down with a total of 8 ships arriving in the first 4 minutes(11 in the first 5) so to hold on to the three top spots was an achievement. Bravo!

Roma per Tutti 2026

Sailonline are honoured and delighted to have been asked to partner an online first Roma per Tutti yacht race with organizing yacht club, Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . In real life, this will be the 33rd edition of this 540nm offshore race from Rome’s Riva di Traiano to the Aeolian Islands and back. Online, the race will not only be our first partnership with CN Riva di Traiano, but also the second race of our Magical Mediterranean series. A number of Mini 6.50s have been entered for the 33rd edition of the Roma per Tutti; so our own vintage Mini is also our virtual yacht of choice for this one.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island. It’s one of the longer ones 6400nm, more than half way around the world (and the Antarctica). It starts the 2026 OCQ2, and will be sailed in our Steinlager 2, contrary to prior notice.
