Comment from SOLer gilzean “As the race comes to an end, I must thank those that made it come true. My only regret is that as a sailor we would not throw caution to the wind and sail into storms, but well done to winners. It was great to see how I did going the more traditional route.”

Commentary
It was the third week in October 2020, after a difficult 10 months for so many around the globe coping with the #COVID19 pandemic, when an email arrived in the SRC inbox, primarily asking about gribs but also, almost in passing, enquiring about tailoring a race. From then on, the Sailonline all-volunteer team got to work with Royal Cape Yacht Club and the organisers of the #Cape2Rio2023 on what was to become the Virtual Cape2Rio Race 2021 hosted by Sailonline NavSim AB. Agreeing the date and two virtual-only events before the next real race in 2023, came first, then honing the Mark Mills C2R74 polar and tailoring it for Sailonline’s server, creating the race, producing the Boat Particulars sheet, coordinating the promotion/publicity, generally managing expectations and finally doing what Sailonline does best – racing the event with gusto, enthusiasm, expertise, generosity, humour and challenging rivalry with keen competition. A large participation flying South African flags (81 registered) in a fleet of 353 racing, representing 46 different nations, was a real joy to see and demonstrated not only the appetite for virtual racing among those who would otherwise sail in reality, but the remarks made during the course of the race, truly vindicates Sailonline’s “brag” that it is probably the best sailing wind navsim on the internet.

The winds were a little different from historical convention and it was interesting to see several of those who have raced the course in the past in reality choosing to sail the traditional route, mindful of prevailing major currents, and using this virtual event as a test case. Perhaps in the future Sailonline will be able to include some global current metrics in races that cross the major oceans. For now, however, the challenge is to win at wind navigation and our podium three surely did this. Each has written a report of their race which will give you a flavour of how our race raced.

Our thanks again must go to RCYC and the organisers of the #Cape2Rio2023 race for putting their trust in Sailonline and, of course, for providing prizes for our podium three. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and bravo to our podium representing South Africa, Italy and UK. See you all again next year!

The #Cape2Rio2023 team have produced a Certificate to commemorate this first Virtual Race and everyone who took part who would like a copy of this, showing their position in the final ranking, are invited to contact anthony@spillebeen.co.uk

Susan Hood Trophy Race 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes racers to Sailonline’s virtual version of their annual Susan Hood Trophy Race. This year, this pleasant weekender on western Lake Ontario will be of about 60nm in length, and online for convenience will start and finish at the Port Credit Yacht Club (PCYC). At or before the real-life Skipper’s Briefing a decision will be made to race the course clockwise (course Delta) or anti-clockwise (Echo). If there is time we will match this online. As before, the race is the first of two that will count towards a special Sailonline's LOOR Series medals, but this year we sail in Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300s. Bon voyage!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - St Helena to Cape Verde

The fourth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us out of the Pacific into the Atlantic for a 2200nm race in Judel Vrolijk 62’s, from the desolation of St Helena, there where Napolean Bonaparte saw out the end of his life, to the even greater desolation of Fogo in the Cape Verde’s. You’ll have to cross the equator, with the coasts of Africa and South America your only navigational restrictions.
