Commentary

In the days leading up to this race there was hardly any wind, causing an early practice sailor to remark that we would take a week to reach Dubrovnik. Luckily, on race day the winds picked up nicely near the start in Venice, giving the 150 sailing boats an easy start and a good night's sleep.

At the first waypoint on Cres island the difference between the top 30 boats was very small, but that was certain to change on the second day, when a tricky navigation between the numerous beautiful Croatian islands was on the program. SOLers shared memories from IRL sailing in this region (see bonknhoot's colorful report) while we kept going at a good cruising pace.

WRmirekd had squeezed out a small advantage, with local heros SimeMali and Leelu22 not far behind, with bonknhoot and at least 10 other boats still seeing chances too. Boats went into the second night with favorable and steady winds, which allowed many to pass the narrow channels between the island on DCs. That could have been a lot harder! This kept the race very tight, but it was SimeMali who found a way to get past WRmirekd to win in front of the historic old walls of Dubrovnik. WRmirekd was an excellent 2nd and Leelu22 finished 3rd, making for two Croatian boats on the podium. Well done, friends!

We all know how hard it is to pass WRmirekd once he gets a lead. So, we can only guess how SimeMali found a way to win. But probably willpower had something to do with it too. See Mirek's detailed report on how it happened from his point of view. Useful reading for anyone who wants to get on (or closer to) the podium. Congratulations SimeMali on a perfect race in home waters!
