Commentary

In reality, the high shipping traffic and narrow channel at the Strait of Hormuz means that the choice of route in IRL boats would be quite restricted. Specifically, the channel used is only a mere 2nm wide in each direction at some points. Of course, in SOL this isn't a concern; we can sail right to the shore of Musandam and take whichever route is fastest to reach the finish!

Much of the 2-week period saw light and variable winds, but there were a few short moments of "reprieve" from that, such as during the midday UTC of 11 and 12 October where winds came at up to 15 knots from the south. However, this also meant that determining the optimal route heading up Musandam's east shore was a challenge in itself. While the best winds were along the 56.5°E line, the boat polar was not quite deep enough to optimally sail this rhumb line. A tradeoff had to be made between gybing to stay close to this line and the performance loss that each gybe carried. As you can see here, a variety of options were considered.

It was during the 11 October window in which 5 boats started at the correct time and made the correct decisions to save those few precious seconds, resulting in times of under 6 hours. This included the 3 Italians Cippalippa (5:59:22), aner59 (5:59:28) and brandystrega (5:59:57), as well as calmxy (5:59:42) from Singapore and rafa (5:59:48) from Peru. Well done!

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
