Commentary

A fiery fleet of 176 as always Elan 410s entered for this year's crossing to the Shetland Islands and mazy zig-zag through them to the usual narrow finish in Lerwick harbour. But as always also, the attrition rate was high, with some 30-odd never managing to get off the line off Aberdeen at all, but with a further 30-odd coming to grief en route, most often courtesy of an unplanned grounding.

The sail along the Scottish coast to the turn north in Moray Firth proved relatively uneventful and the fleet was closely packed as they hoisted spinnakers in the dark for a pleasant run, given the time of year, up to Gruney Island off the tip of Mainland. Those who set off at deeper angles were rewarded nicely by the new WX and Zorba777 took the lead. However, despite the explicit warning in the SIs, he and most everybody else neglected to explore the possibility of approaching Gruney via the east coast of mainland. Not for the first time, this proved the way to go and bonknhoot and rafa rounded the island well ahead of the pack.

Alas for our intrepid pair, victory was not to be, rafa running aground during a further cold night afloat, and bonknhoot simply forgetting to leave Hascosay to port in plain daylight, thus letting Dingo, who, sailing carefully, had always stayed in contention, take the gun! Fair dinkum Dingo ;-) !

The Vineyard Race 2026


For the 16th consecutive year, our SOLers are invited to tackle this iconic 250nm overnighter. The classic route charges out through the sound, leaves Buzzards Bay Light to starboard, rounds Block Island to starboard, and heads home.

This year's weapon of choice is the Beneteau First 47.7. A proven performer since its 2012 SOL debut, this Farr-designed cruiser/racer excels at leading real and virtual handicap fleets. Success will demand sharp tactical navigation, so watch the polars closely to conquer the sound's shifting winds!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
