Newport Bermuda Race 2022

On-Line Race starts Friday 17th June at 1700 UTC

Sailonline is delighted to announce that we will again be partnering with the Bermuda Race Organizing Committee ( BROC – made up of the Cruising Club of America and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club ) for the online running of the famous Newport Bermuda Race. So, if you cannot make it out onto the real water for this epic event, here is your chance to compete with both real and online sailors in virtual reality on sailonline.org.

The very first Bermuda Race was held in 1906 when the general view was that it would be insane for amateur sailors to race offshore in boats under 80 feet. Thomas Fleming Day, editor of ‘The Rudder’ magazine, vehemently disagreed, insisting, “The danger of the sea for generations has been preached by the ignorant.” Certain that an ocean race would be enjoyable and safe, and also develop better sailors and better boats, the Newport Bermuda Race was born.

Since 1906, more than 50,000 men and women of all ages and 5,000 yachts have sailed in this unique race that is known and respected worldwide as "The Thrash to the Onion Patch". Also, the race takes some credit for the formation of the Fastnet Race, for accelerating the career of famed designer Olin Stephens and for the development of new rating rules.

One of the unique features of Sailonline is the ability to run different yacht polars in the same race, and as the Bermuda Race has traditionally been conducted in four major divisions, we will be doing the same in this year’s virtual Newport Bermuda Race 2020.

Participants can choose one of the following when registering for the online race:

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division
Reichel Pugh 64

St. Davids Lighthouse Division
First 44.7 Asymmetric

Finisterre Cruising Division
Delphia 47

Double-Handed Division
Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300

For more information about each yacht and a view of the polar diagram that will apply online, please click on a yacht type name, and note that the First 44.7 we will be sailing is a copy of the polar SOLer SlideRule uses on his real-life S.V. 'Slide Rule' which will be competing in the real-life race.

Also, a great incentive for all online competitors are the fabulous prizes being offered by the BROC and their sponsors across all divisions - Skipper bags for 1st, Navigator bags for 2nd, Hats for 3rd, and Posters to all finishers. To make sure that the race organizers know who you are, please register on the Bermuda Race Prizes site.

Sailonline's virtual Bermuda Race will open for pre-race practice on Tuesday 7th June at 2300 UTC.

Christmas to Christmas Island 2025

Two waypoints, start and finish, and between them 5827 NM of two oceans. Not much time if we want to sit at the Christmas Eve table. You will need to maintain an average speed of over 10 knots, maybe quite possible with this Maxi Trimaran, but prepare your vessel well and choose the best of the many possible routes. Hands up everyone who knew there were TWO Christmas Islands?! OK, maybe you have sailed this Sailonline course before... but it's time to get ready for the 2025 challenge of racing between Christmas Island in the Pacific to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean! It also marks the conclusion of our prestigious Ocean Race Championship 2025. Please have fun! Fair winds!
