Commentary

IRL, only 7 AC72s were ever built, all today either scrapped or curated, but online they race on, with most recently a terrific turnout of 96 competitors making 386 attempts at setting a new lap record on SOL's very own Bermuda Triangle of c 90 offshore Atlantical miles in strong winds and presumably big seas, and no reefs possible in the high-modulus carbon solid wingplans of these perhaps most unseaworthy craft (bar the DN) in SOL's extensive boathouse.

Best triangle times it proved were generally to be found on Thursday the 7th of December, starting around mid-morning locally, and many survived to tell the tale, proverbially tall at 40 metres to the top of the mast, 4 metres taller than the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, the tallest building on the Bermudan mainland, with the best story coming from StIngFI. Averaging 39.3 knots, our flying Finnish friend got out and back in just 2:25:50, in the process knocking almost an hour off the previous best time of 3:25:04 set by Germany's spacecraft rumskib back in 2017. Some going, but two days later, the pirate Pugwash sharing his name with Nelson, missed stealing the gold by exactly one second. History, you gotta love it!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!

Cape Town to Auckland 2024

Welcome to the second leg of this Round The World series 2024. It's also the April edition of this year's ocean race championship. The course is the same as the one sailed in 2023, but this year we sail the iconic Swan 65, as suggested in the concluding RTW race last year.
Prepare yourselves for an epic 30-day journey, navigating through the unpredictable waters of the South Seas.
