Commentary

"The sailing race commenced with an impressive start as a total of 100 boats set off on time. Throughout the event, a remarkable participation count of 141 boats was recorded, out of which 120 successfully crossed the finish line (as of the time of writing). The race course presented a unique challenge as the start and finish points were positioned relatively close on the same latitude, approximately 157° apart. However, following the great circle route would have required traversing the Antarctic region as far as 75°S, which was clearly impractical for sailing. Consequently, a consensus emerged during the initial week to navigate towards a midway point along the southern race boundaries. Ultimately, this alternative route proved to be the preferred choice. An intriguing development occurred on the sixth day of the race when the first skipper noticed an opportunity in the Bass Strait route and promptly altered their plans. Subsequently, this route emerged as the winning strategy, bringing considerable success to those who adopted it. By the seventh day, a group of 8 to 10 skippers, known as the ""northern group,"" became convinced that the Bass Strait was the key to victory. However, they encountered a high-pressure system in the Tasman Sea on the sixteenth day, leading to a temporary "restart" in their progress. From that point onwards, the competition became incredibly intense, with the podium finishers separated by a mere one-minute margin. Meanwhile, the "southerners" who adhered to the great circle route, rather than relying on their routers, found themselves finishing more than a day behind the race leader."

Undoubtedly, this was a long and challenging race, with the shortest theoretically sailable distance measuring 6667 nm, and approximately 30 nm longer when rounding the north island. The eventual winner completed an impressive 7558 nm, while the boat covering the longest distance sailed a remarkable 9574 nm, earning the position of #117. Conversely, the boat with the shortest distance sailed 7058 nm and secured the #55 ranking.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island.
