Commentary

One of the many great things about online sailboat racing is that no matter the weather, the race always goes ahead, and so, in what must have been wild and windy conditions, exactly 100 SOLers in 100 identical TP52s reported on the starting line off San Diego for a race that IRL got canned. Another great thing about online sailboat racing is that no matter the weather, no gear failure ever occurs, and so, contrariwise, the harder it blows, the sooner the race is run, and the less retirements due to fatigue or ennui ensue, which on this occasion meant that 94% (easy maths) of the boats that started finished.

A quick race then, and indeed the leaders got around the island skirting course in just over twelve hours, or an average speed over the ground of about 12 knots. Fair going, but Pyewacket, if she'd been out IRL, would undoubtedly have bettered her existing monohull course record of 10:49:52 by several hours. Be that as it may, online, it was the redoubtable WRmirekd, who set a new SOL course record of 12:14:44, a mere 3 seconds quicker his dead-heated podium pursuers!

Regata dell’Accademia Navale 2026

Welcome to Sailonline’s partnership with the City of Livorno (Leghorn say the English) in cooperation with the local yacht clubs and the Italian Navy, offering all the online opportunity to race the famous Regata dell’Accademia Navale - 630nm in length. Starting and finishing in Livorno, this year the race takes you the length and breadth of the Tyrrhenian Sea via little Mortorio (Mortoriotto) off Sardinia to Capri and home again to Livorno. This race also counts towards Sailonline’s Magical Mediterranean Series and the SuperBuddy title. Online, you will be sailing a Mini 6.50, to give you a match against several of the real-life entrants, which you will be able to track on-screen!

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium.
