Commentary

Over one hundred hardy SOLers made it to Kamchatsky (or variant spelling, as you please) in time to join one of Skip Novak's mysteriously many Pelagic 77 expedition vessels, and, after three weeks of SOLing, the first of sixty-four of these mighty machines to finish crossed the line in Tromsoe, having covered 4734.3 nm at a very respectable average nine and one quarter knots to get there.

Not so slow, but quite the slog nevertheless, as attested to in two fine reports under the defaced Siberian flags above, from our winner, wsguerin, and his closest rival on the podium, antares_sydney.

So fine, that all that rests this reporter is to congratulate wsguerin on what is his second and equally memorable win of 2024 and indeed of his SOL career, after having earlier 'Beagled' best through the Canaries in a Tall Ship, and equally antares_sydney on his best podium of the year and his career, not forgetting HappyHour who snook in third to add a further podium to his collection of well over thirty such certificates. Well done, and all who stayed the distance!

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!
