Commentary

On a late afternoon, February 5th, we embarked on our journey across the Indian Ocean, brimming with anticipation. Initially, the race seemed straightforward, but after a week, a significant split occurred within the frontrunner group. A major contingent opted to gybe southwest, maintaining their course for approximately 50 nautical miles before gybing back northwest. This strategic separation persisted for four days, with the gybing groups eventually intersecting the path of the frontrunners. As a result, the 'non-gybers' found themselves leading the pack, ultimately producing the podium finisher from this group.

The weather conditions proved favorable throughout the race. Occasional winds reaching 25 knots, fortunately from behind, propelled us to speeds exceeding 20 knots at times. Despite encountering a high-pressure front on day 4, which was swiftly overcome without significant delay, we maintained an impressive average speed of over 14 knots, with the podium finisher covering approximately 5100 nautical miles.

Remarkably, all 156 registered sailors commenced the race on time. Additionally, 10 more sailors registered and started late, joined by on-water spectators adding to the excitement. At the time of writing, 144 boats have successfully crossed the finish line, with a dozen more potentially finishing before the race concludes.

Sailonline are honoured and delighted to have been asked to partner an online first Roma per Tutti yacht race with organizing yacht club, Circolo Nautico Riva di Traiano . In real life, this will be the 33rd edition of this 540nm offshore race from Rome’s Riva di Traiano to the Aeolian Islands and back. Online, the race will not only be our first partnership with CN Riva di Traiano, but also the second race of our Magical Mediterranean series. A number of Mini 6.50s have been entered for the 33rd edition of the Roma per Tutti; so our own vintage Mini is also our virtual yacht of choice for this one.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

A number of our races in this new Magical Mediterranean series will be partnership with famous real-life races, but this first race is pure fiction - 780nm in refurbed IMOCA 60s, past or through the Balearic Isles and on into the Alboran Sea, to a finish off Nador on the Maroc Mediterranean coast.
