The race drew an impressive 145 boats to participate. Of these, 105 started on time, and 98 had reached the finish line by the time of writing. This "wrong way around the world" race served as a potential warm-up for the upcoming leg of the RTW 2024.

The race commenced from Southampton in a light northwesterly breeze, with the fleet unanimously choosing a course towards the French coast. Passing outside Brest at Point de Vue, the main group navigated across the Bay of Biscay to the northwestern tip of Spain. By the fourth day, upon reaching the latitude of Lisbon, a smaller contingent, led by Chipspitter, veered southwest into the mid-Atlantic, while the majority of the fleet stayed closer to the coast. This larger group sailed east of Madeira, passed through the Canary Islands, and followed the African coastline down to the latitude of Dakar.

On the 13th day, 500 nautical miles east of Cape São Roque (the northeastern coast of Brazil), the fleet experienced a significant split. One group, primarily composed of Italian boats, opted for the open water to the south, seeking more predictable winds. Meanwhile, bonknhoot guided the western group along the Brazilian coast. This divergence proved crucial at the end of the race.

The coastal western group extended their lead over the easterners by an impressive 370 nautical miles over the next 60 hours, reaching day 16.

Despite the substantial lead, forecasts and routing suggested that the easterners would win by 17 hours. The gap between the two groups narrowed daily, and by day 19, the easterners, aided by a favorable tailwind south of the high-pressure system, overtook the western group, who were struggling against headwinds north of the high-pressure zone. The eastern fleet ultimately crossed the finish line 135 nautical miles ahead of the western group.

The Italian fleet's impressive performance saw them secure the top four positions, with the western fleet's leader, FreyjaUSA, finishing in 14th place. Garagiste, the first boat to head west, finished in 62nd place.

Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.
