Commentary

92 boats set sail on time. All in all, 142 participated and 110 of them reached the finish line (at the time of writing).

All boats started on a broad starboard reach, heading for open water. The fleet was more or less gathered on a unanimous front until the end of day two. At this point there was a notable split in the fleet, resulting in two predominant strategies, in which the "usual suspects" were equally represented. The western party, obviously routing on long term forecast, expecting a favourable condition at a later stage of the race. They suffered a substantial loss over the next 16 days. At this point the forthcoming winner was 442 nm behind the leader. From that point onwards the Westerners narrowed the gap fast, catching up in less than 5 days, overtaking the lead on day 24. The "winner" of the eastern party ended up on #14, 8 hours behind the winner.

The winning strategy seemed to be a combination of the two main strategies, as the winner Olev, started out with the eastern party, but gradually slipped over, joining the western party on day 14.

This was indeed a long and challenging race, both in time and distance. Looking ahead, it may be wise to consider faster vessels in such a long race.

And it’s a border that matters, there’s gas here! But why worry, let’s race – 2050nm in our goo’ol’ Open 60s in between the production platforms, prowling destroyers and submarines.
