Commentary

Another terrific Tall Ships Series completed on Saturday, August 9, when one of our Sailonliners of the first hour, Tamalone, flying the Swiss flag, crossed the finish of the last leg of the series in Esbjerg, just ahead of the time limit. In total more than 150 SOLers competed in at least one race of the 4-race series, and Tamalone was one of the stalwarts who raced them all; steadily and stubbornly in the spirit of SOL.

At the sharp end of the fleet, there were of course many others who got all four races in, and the racing was close, with many SOL-hounds having their day. In fact, ten different SOLers occupied the twelve podium opportunities across the four traces, with only the overall winner pepsPV5, a new SYC-member from Spain, and ALP317, from France and not yet an SYC-member, featuring twice.

Sensing perhaps that his victory in the longest and most challenging sea-crossing of the series from Le Havre to Aberdeen could be the harbinger of overall victory pepsPV5 has shared a report with us, which you will find under the silhouette of his tall ship above. Thank you and well done pepsPV5, and thank you and well done Sail Training International for allowing Sailonline to participate virtually once again in your celebration of sail, and, if the winds were as pleasant and suitable (moderate winds, often across the beam) in real life as they were online, we wager your celebration was equally sensational!

Natuna Sea Race 2026

At 4.0N 108.2E lies the island of Natuna Besar, Great Natuna, surrounded by at least 154 islands, of which 127 uninhabited, Indonesia’s Natuna Regency, and all around this archipelago, the Natuna Sea, bordered by Borneo to the east, the Java Sea to the south, and the Malay peninsula to the west, and extending north to cross a disputed international border with China into the South China Sea. And it’s a border that matters, there’s gas here! But why worry, let’s race – 2050nm in our goo’ol’ Open 60s in between the production platforms, prowling destroyers and submarines.
