Commentary

Another thrilling chapter in sailing history has been written. This race featured two distinct strategies from the fleet right from the start. The main contingent began on a starboard tack, maintaining a tight formation throughout the initial phase. Meanwhile, a second group opted for a port tack, spreading wide across the course before eventually veering westward.

Day 2 brought a developing low-pressure system. The fleet adeptly maneuvered to its western edge, riding favorable northerlies that propelled them an impressive 500 nautical miles over 36 hours. The next low-pressure system proved more divisive. A smaller group chose to go north of the system, contending with 12 hours of headwinds, while the rest stayed south. Despite the differing paths, the two groups remained relatively close, holding similar positions for the next four days. By Day 7, the northern and southern fleets began to converge, with the easterly group rejoining about 70 nautical miles behind the leaders. Then, on Day 12, a persistent high-pressure ridge stalled the entire fleet, leveling the standings once again.

On Day 13, the eventual winner made a decisive move—spotting and seizing an opening no one else recognized. This tactical brilliance proved to be the turning point. After two intense weeks at sea, the podium positions were secured, and the gaps began to widen. At the finish line, the winner crossed nearly 6 hours ahead of the second-place boat, with another 2 hours to the third. The rest of the fleet followed in a closely packed group, rounding off an unforgettable contest.
