Commentary

To quote Jimmy Greaves again (it wasn't Bill Shankly), 'Football is a game of two halves' and so was this race across the Atlantic in our new foiling Figaro IIIs, which alas, with the wind almost entirely moderate and from astern, mostly flopped rather than foiled over the entire month that we were at sea.

The first half then was a typical dash across Biscay to a point somewhere off Finisterre to then ride south on the prevailing Portuguese Norde wind and on to Africa. Other than how close or how far off to pass Finisterre, there were no other strategic options, so the leaders were all still very close as they passed the La Palma canary, although a few people took an extended half-time break there.

The second half too remained a close-fought battle for many, many days, with the North East Trades proving to be particularly predictable, but after more than a week of foil-flopping, choices began to be necessary. Some got it wrong and some got it right, of whom Appo38 got it most right of all to achieve his first SOL victory and an impressive 1-3 for France together with his compatriot YANN in this very French regatta in very French boats. Magnifique!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra


From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
