Commentary

Well-telled 91 stout SOLers assembled in Suez Bay for the start of this the last race of our Africa by Sea series, back to Port Said whence we had embarked on our circumnavigation of the Mother of Mankind those many moons ago. A sizable number of the assembly proved to be spectators; on the other hand, all but 5 of the fleet that started made it all the way, short-tacking long stretches of the eponymous canal, led in by brellis, hotly pursued by WRmirekd, who needed a countable result here to secure an overall victory in the Series, and by the reliably resolute rafa.

So well done podium. And especially brellis who has written a detailed report on how it all enfolded; well worth a read, thank you, brellis!

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!
