Another memorable race is now written into the logbooks.A total of 76 boats set sail on time, with 140 participants eventually joining the event. At the time of writing, 119 have successfully crossed the finish line.

The majority of the fleet began on a western approach, sailing on a starboard tack. Within the first 24 hours, the sailors faced two wind shifts that kept everyone alert. On day three, the fleet encountered a high-pressure ridge but managed to stay fairly compact despite the changing conditions.

By day four, just south of Cape Town, the first major strategic split occurred. A small group of competitors broke away to the west, while the main fleet chose to gybe northwest with the shifting winds. The western group, though trailing by roughly 60 nautical miles, successfully slipped below the high-pressure zone that later stalled the northwestern group for over 24 hours. As a result, the western fleet gained a lead of nearly 80 nautical miles — a margin that held steady over the next two days.
Both groups then sailed under trailing winds, keeping positions largely unchanged until the two fleets gradually converged. The western contingent rejoined ahead of the main fleet, and by day eleven, the leaders maintained an 80-nautical-mile advantage over the pursuing pack.

One notable feature of this race was how evenly matched the leading boats were. The top five contenders reached the finish line within an impressive 11-hour window, followed closely by the next dozen, who arrived less than an hour apart — a testament to the competitiveness and skill across the fleet.

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!
