Commentary

Well, those of you who in their dim-and-distant past raced one-designs round the cans will recall when the go'ol 'Olympic Triangle-Sausage' began to be replaced by 'Sausages-Only' back in the early Noughties; the idea was to make the races more tactical, and take the wind out of the sails of the power-reachers. So lo and behold, this course borrowed from a time long before, turned out in 2025 to be the 'Mother of All Sausages'; 120nm to windward out to the Eddystone Light, and 120nm downwind back to Cowes, in less than 30 hours - exhausting!

However, online the tactical trickery of positioning, in the wind ahead or astern of your opponent, of 'the sausage' are lost - virtual boats can't cast a shadow, and so this race reduced to close margins all the way, with the rounding of Eddystone and threading the Needles proving of quite some import, next to the usual calls of when to tack and when to gybe, and how free-and-fast or high-and-hot to sail towards the next tack- or gybe-point.

And, historic (eh no, mythical) though this race is, no vintage SOLers quite showed how best to do that, and instead it was three relative newcomers to our virtual seas who, less than three seconds apart, piled onto the podium, transforming it for all the world into a 'hippo-baguette' sandwich. Delicious!

Natuna Sea Race 2026

At 4.0N 108.2E lies the island of Natuna Besar, Great Natuna, surrounded by at least 154 islands, of which 127 uninhabited, Indonesia’s Natuna Regency, and all around this archipelago, the Natuna Sea, bordered by Borneo to the east, the Java Sea to the south, and the Malay peninsula to the west, and extending north to cross a disputed international border with China into the South China Sea. And it’s a border that matters, there’s gas here! But why worry, let’s race – 2050nm in our goo’ol’ Open 60s in between the production platforms, prowling destroyers and submarines.
