Commentary

108 SOLers aboard their DN ice yachts showed for our second long distance race across the frozen latitudes of the high north of the planet, now back from Alaska's Browerville to the only slightly more populated place of Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen's main island - popular with digital nomads apparently, so who knows maybe some SOLers lingered after arrival. A tricky enough passage, what with predictors, routers and auto grib loaders not always wishing to behave in the rare airs of our top of the World, but with the DNs regularly hitting 50 knots and more, for those who didn't crash into a berg or a beach or a bear or a walrus, the chaos was over within four days or so.

First home this time was vida, with a big lead of 15 minutes on second-placed WRmirekd, who in turn bested QMaxx in third by a further 15 minutes, the unusually large gaps in time (and distance; 15 minutes is 10nm in a DN!) reflecting just how tricky the race was. Lake Vättern PYOC 2026


Back in 2013, longstanding SOLer Musigny and his friend xthyra invited us for a three race tour of beautiful Lake Vättern in the heart of southern Sweden. After many years, we return there for a quick sprint from a start in front of the village of Brandstorp, either way around Visingso island in the middle of the lake, but PORT HAND ROUND a buoy off the Granna piers on the eastern shore and back, once again avoiding Visingso as best you can. At least 20nm in trusty Scandinavian 11m One Designs; good luck!
