The fifth leg of the Migration series got underway in 10.5 knots of headwind, with the fleet setting off on port tack, heading south. The first 24 hours brought unstable conditions, forcing repeated tacks as the contenders searched for a favourable course. By day two, more settled conditions finally arrived, with stronger easterlies propelling the fleet at speeds exceeding 30 knots. Off the Labrador coast, yet another wind shift brought south-westerlies, providing a relatively stable 30-hour stretch. By this stage, the fleet had spread across a 400-nautical-mile line. The usual suspects, however, remained tightly grouped, keeping within just 20 nautical miles of one another. Day four brought the first major obstacle: a high-pressure system with very little room for manoeuvre, as its advancing front swept down against the fleet. By day six, another high-pressure system had settled over the Azores, significantly slowing most contenders. Those on the eastern side, closer to the African coast, managed to slip through and find favourable winds, taking the lead for the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, the western half of the fleet had split into two distinct groups. The smaller, four-boat group on the more easterly side managed to stay ahead of the larger pack. Among them, however, one solitary sailor decided to go his own way on day eight. The gamble paid off: taking the lead on day ten, he managed to hold it for the following two days.

Day thirteen brought another decisive split among the frontrunners. One contender broke away towards the southwest in search of stronger winds. It proved to be a remarkably successful move, building a substantial lead of up to 190 nautical miles. By day fifteen, the breakaway had rejoined the fleet ahead of the other leading contenders. This new pecking order remained largely unchanged for the next five days, until the second-placed contender suffered an unconfirmed technical problem. The boat was unable to continue for approximately eight hours, a delay that ultimately cost seven positions. As the fleet approached the finish, the podium contenders were following distinctly different routes. The eventual winner was still as far back as 27th place just 30 hours before the finish, making the final outcome anything but obvious. The last stretch proved particularly unpredictable, with stagnant and shifting winds causing significant changes in the standings. Positions that had seemed secure were suddenly up for grabs, producing a dramatic conclusion to an already eventful passage.

Three weeks at sea and approximately 9,000 nautical miles later, the podium finishers crossed the line within an astonishing 1 minute and 9 seconds of one another. A remarkably close finish after a race characterised by constantly changing conditions, tactical gambles and several dramatic changes in fortune. In total, 105 contenders participated, with 82 having reached the finish line at the time of writing. The routing spread was substantial. The winner sailed 10,338 nautical miles, while the shortest distance recorded was 9,661 nautical miles, resulting in 49th place. At the other end of the spectrum, the longest route measured 11,170 nautical miles, finishing in 27th place. Another demanding Migration leg where patience, routing decisions and a fair share of fortune proved decisive—and where the final 30 hours turned the leaderboard upside down.

Mad Max by Balloon 2026 - Across the Outback

Mad Max Rockatansky doesn’t get to go in a balloon in any of the Legends of the Wasteland, and the Wasteland is not necessarily the Outback of Australia, but Mel Gibson and film director George Miller indubitably are… of Australia, and ballooning as reconnaissance is a main feature of the Mad Max spin-off video game, so here goes: 1500nm in a balloon from somewhere on the edge of the Outback, Goondiwindi, to cross a finish line at Fitzroy Crossing, somewhere on the edge of the Outback!
