Hi,
I'd be interested in helping if there is to be any 'handicapping' of Tall Ships. I am a former Tall Ships Race director and was involved in the development of the STA/STI Rating Rule.

CRUISE IN COMPANY - Helsinki to Riga

Welcome to Helsinki - second host city for this year's Tall Ships Races 2013, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International.

The Tall Ships are in port until Saturday, 20 July, when they will leave to find their own way to Riga. The Cruise-in-Company phase of Tall Ships racing offers opportunities for crew exchanges and inter-crew competitions. No such respite for SOLers, however, who will leave Helsinki at the same time as the real fleet but will race on to Riga. The real ships will continue to be tracked via Yellowbrick trackers and will also be findable via AIS/marinetraffic.

Sailonline's second ship in this year's tall ships events is a Full Rigger.
So, what is this Cruise in Company (CinC)?

Since 1964 the pattern of a Tall Ships’ Race series has usually been a Race followed by a CinC and then a second Race.

The series is designed for some 3,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 25 from some twenty or more countries. In port at the end of the first race, and partly as a result of the crews having experienced challenge and competition, many friendships are formed among the crews.

Before the start of the CinC, Captains are encouraged to “swop” some of their youngsters with some from another ship, preferably one of a different type and nationality. There is also some “buddying up” between groups of ships who then arrange to overnight together in a chosen port on route.

Often they choose somewhere remote so that they can have barbeques on a beach and have a change from the buzz of the more formal programmes at the terminal ports.
Race 2 - Riga to Sczcecin

Welcome to Riga - third host port for this year's The Tall Ships Races 2013, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International

The Tall Ships festival in Riga starts on Thursday, 25 July, and the ships remain in port until departure on Sunday 28 July. The race start for the Riga to Szczecin leg is some 120nm away (near Ventspils) and the start of Race 2 is on Monday, 29 July at 1600utc. The real ships continue to be tracked via Yellowbrick tracker

Sailonline's third ship in this year's tall ships events is a 90m Barque.

Lycamobile Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta 2013

Momentum building in the Med

Countdown to fun in the sun

Welcome to Barcelona where the Lycamobile Tall Ships Mediterranean Regatta 2013 gets under way under the auspices of Sail Training International. Sailonline is delighted to be continuing its association with Sail Training International for this regatta and will be running virtual tall ships races in parallel with the real ones.

The Tall Ships festival in Barcelona begins on Saturday, 21 September, and ships will be remaining in port until Tuesday, 24 September, when they will race from Barcelona to Toulon - race start is at 1400utc.

The real ships continue to be tracked via Yellowbrick trackers so you can watch their progress - Sailonline has within-race a small group of tall ships that perform similarly to its 90m Barque. You can also get an overview of all marine traffic in the area from AIS.

See the Races Forum Thread for other useful links and background info!

Sailonline is once again providing the virtual Tall Ships Race and we need to select our ship ... our Barque 90 is, apparently, too big/fast (probably) so we need to choose either:

Clipper

OR

Full Rigger

Please will those of you with expertise in these matters cast your eye over the entry list and indicate which of our two choices would seem to sail most appropriately!

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

The fifth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back south down the Atlantic from Sao Tomé on the Equator to Tristan da Cunha on the edge of the Roaring Forties. It’s 2500nm; in your path the Benguela winds and current along the south west African coast, and behind that the St Helena High stretching halfway to South America. New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base

For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
