Board » Technical Support » Improving Chrome Performance - DNS Server selection

For some time I have been having problems with new websearches/page requests in Chrome returning a DNS failure error message. I have googled at some length and earlier today found a brilliantly helpful solution (quoted below). I have now positively selected the DNS server (and backup) in line with the suggestions and... Chrome is running faster and smoother than it has ever done!

Would anyone out there with real computer know-how let me know if what I have done is in any way potentially a bad thing?

Thanks!

For those of us running Vista or Windows 7, here's how to change the DNS server:

Open Network & Sharing Center: Click on the icon of your internet connection on your task bar. At the bottom should be the words "Open Network And Sharing Center"; click on them.

Click on "Change Adapter Settings" on the left-hand list of topics.
This will direct you to a page where you will see your LAN (wired) connection and your wireless connections.

Right click on the network connection you are using.

Scroll down to and click on "Properties". If prompted for an administrator password, provide one.

A new window will pop up. Double-click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"

Another new window pops up. Look at the lower grouping of greyed-out boxes. Select the radio button for "Use the following DNS server addresses:".
Type 8.8.8.8 into the preferred DNS server slot. You have to hit the right arrow key after each 8 or you will end up with an improperly formatted server.
Type 8.8.4.4 into the alternate server. Again you need to hit the right arrow key after each number.

Select the "Validate settings on exit" checkbox, then click "OK".

Click "OK" on the properties window.

The Window Network Diagnostic will now run. If it cannot find an error, then you have properly reset your DNS server.

Thanks!!
RC.. I see what you have done.. and yes, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are indeed valid DNS servers but they are owned by Google and most probably located in the US.

Usually your home broadband router would pick up a DNS server IP address (from your local ISP) and you at home would automatically use that. Your local ISP DNS server is probably a lot more local than the 8.8.8.8 one so in a perfect world that should me much quicker and more reliable than anything that you have configured.

Perhaps it was your ISP that was having problems with their DNS server.

Each time you go to a new website now your PC will be 'asking' the Google servers in the US for the IP address for that site in order to connect - and that request will be going 'through' your ISP

sounds like your ISP was having issues with their DNS servers.. or your router wasn't working correctly.. Or perhaps Google are just wanting stats on who is wanted what via DNS.. spooky!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
