Pit-Ilul Chase – Race Report

The 540nm race off the west coast of Greenland was a test of reading the weather patterns. The start was difficult in very light winds. The leading boats took a direct route south whilst some adventurous types went in all other directions. As the wind stabilised, the fleet headed south and picked up speed. A few gains and losses were made when choosing the best lane to sail.

The big break came after about 30 hours with a split between those that went east towards the Greenland coast and those that continued south down the middle of the David Channel. This resulted in over 100nm separation between the leading contenders and with variable weather patterns, one side was always going to win. The boats hugging the coast took a shortcut through a narrow channel east of the island of Disko Øer. Those in the west had open water to choose their route.

The final weather updates decided the race. The eastern boats fell into a blue hole and the speed dropped. The west kept better wind speed and make good progress despite tacking upwind. Rafa took a comfortable win of almost an hour. Two kiwis, NZL Scotsman and iomkiwi, filled the rest of the podium after a close battle in the closing few miles. Ghibli led the eastern boats home half an hour later, missing out on the podium after leading most of the race.

Red Eye - Melville Island PYOC 2026

Melville Island is the largest of the Tivi group opposite the port of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Tropically forested and thinly populated, not a lot goes on there, but let’s race around it anyway, lar- or starboard round, it’s a little more than 120nm, so, no matter where you are navigating from on the planet, you will be hard-pressed to complete the course aboard your J-80 in daylight hours!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Guam to Ouvéa


The third race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us southeastward now down the Pacific, from Guam’s Apra Harbour at 13.5 degrees North, back across the Equator to the glorious New Caledonian resort island of Ouvéa, on the edge of the Tropic of Capricorn at 20.5 degrees South. It’s 2400nm, and there’s more than a few other islands in the way, so mind where you go in your Ocean 50s. Race #1981
