This race will be opening for practice tomorrow, Wednesday 15 May 2013, but before it does I would like your opinion(s) on the weather system in use.

Right now it is set up with global_gfs - SOL's "usual" weather, NOAA grib files which update every 6hrs. The resolution of these files is, at best, 0.5d.

In the Baltic it is possible for SOL to use Baltic MM5 weather files which have a much higher resolution, ideal for archipelago racing

BUT, and it is a big BUT....

the files only update, at best, twice a day and in the past, at weekends in particular, the files sometimes haven't updated at all, leaving us with forecast weather unamended.

SO... please would you register your votes below for global_gfs or Baltic MM5 weather a.s.a.p. so that I can get it squared away.

To preview the race as it is currently set up (global_gfs) please log in as the sol boat:

USERNAME: sol
PASSWORD: sol

and then click here

Thanks!

NB the button above the choice is the voting one.

Please do not use the third button - it is to show me the voting results :-) and I think if you click that one then you can't vote (again)

Alo RC & All.
The link http://www.sailonline.org/wiki/edit/Baltic_MM5/ has a problem. Anyhow I voted for him. Let's have a try and, good race to SOLers.
Sail Fair.
JB - the name Baltic MM5 mistakenly appeared as a link... it wasn't meant to be one but it is how the wiki formatted what I typed (with the _) :-)

I have now changed it so it won't show as a link.

Thanks!

Thank you to those who voted... the race is now open for practice and, as voted for, the wx system is remaining as global_gfs - less high res but regular updates!

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
