Board » Flag Officers » Races » Auckland to Musket Cove - Fiji Ocean Race 2013

On Saturday, 1 June 2013 at midday (midnight on 31 May UTC) a small group of yachts will set sail from Auckland's Westhaven, for a point some 1155nm distant... the resort of Musket Cove, Fiji. This will be a tricky S to N race across one of the toughest areas of the Pacific and will test all who race.

Sailonline is delighted to have been invited by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron to provide a virtual version of this classic race and will be bringing the real fleet onto the race screen, courtesy of Yellowbrick Tracking.

The bulk of the real fleet will be monohulls, so SOL will be sailing her Beneteau 477, but it is expected that Team Vodafone Sailing will be out to beat her own multihull record set in 2011.

Current Records:

Monohull: Camper (Chris Nicholson) 103h 38m 16s in 2011

Multihull: Team Vodafone Sailing (Simon Hull) 103h 20 m 57s

Details of the Entrants are linked below.

Race Report:

The Auckland Fiji race is one of the regular races from New Zealand to the Pacific Islands where traditionally the yachts travelled for a winter break in the warmer waters. Sailonline teamed up with RNZYS to follow the real race, which had a small but competitive fleet. The race proved to be a tough battleground with half the boats suffering damage in the gale force headwinds.

On SOL, the outlaw made the winning move after the first day’s downwind and reaching start. He headed west to take full advantage of the wind shift by positioning the boat to leverage height over his leading competition. With the west systems coming from the west, outlaw also saw the reaching conditions earlier than those further east.

This advantage was more than enough to maintain the lead when the fleet entered the trade winds. Most of the top positions were established by now and despite the best efforts of those chasing no-one could get close to outlaw. Rafa was runner up and Sambaqui finished strongly to take the final podium place just ahead of azur. The top ten were from ten nations, a highlight of how international SOL is.

Port Huron to Mackinac 2025

First run in 1925, the race from Huron to Mackinac is considered to be the world's longest consecutively run freshwater sailing race. Let's go - 260nm in X-362 Sport's awaits!!
Throw away unnecessary ballast from your boats. Fresh water has less buoyancy, which means greater draft and greater resistance to movement, which means lower speeds, etc.😊

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
