The THIRD short, informal, practice race will be held on Thursday, 24 October 2013.

This will be a special practice race.
There are 5 marks spread around the course. Each combination of two marks (called a "leg" from now on) is associated with a certain amount of points. Participants shall cut trough marks (at maximum zoom) in an order of their own choosing. For each two subsequent mark-cuts (legs) a participant does, he/she receives the points associated with that particular leg.

If a participant sails a leg for the second time, in the same direction, no points will we given for the second time.

Participants should clearly communicate via the chat when they have completed a leg, for example "I completed leg M1-M3". (Exact channel shall be announced within 5 minutes before the start in both English and Sailtalk channel)

RACE START:
The race starts 18:00:00 utc, marks cut before 18:00:00 utc do not count. Participants may touch the mark at, and before 18:00:00. Participants may choose any mark to start.

RACE FINISH:
Towback for the real race is at 20:00 utc, the practice race will stop when all participants are placed back at SOL start. Any marks cut while being towed to SOL start don't count.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:
Practice Mark 5 will move into the wind with a speed of 0.69 knots starting from 18:00 utc.

RANKING:
- The participants will be ranked on their number of points in descending order (the more points the better)
- If two participants have the same number of points, the one that completed his last leg first will be ranked higher than the other. If it is unclear who was first, both participants receive the same ranking.
- All participants will be ranked
- No G-SCOW is awarded, as this is not a normal practice race.

USEFUL NOTE:
The amount of points per leg is roughly equal the the number of minutes it should take to complete.

Little mathematical note: It is impossible to connect 5 points with lines, without crossing the lines at some point. Try it :)

Newport to Annapolis 2025

The Newport to Annapolis race, first held in 1947, is one of the most historic and well-known US East Coast blue water races. Linking two seaports dating from the US nation's birth, Annapolis and Newport, the race contrasts the country's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. Since 1969, the route has run from Annapolis through the Chesapeake Bay to Newport. The SOLers will sail 470nm in their Carkeek40s in the original direction from Newport to Annapolis, including the Chesapeake, which is such a daunting challenge that the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race for the Volvo Trophy added it to the course, as did the Volvo Ocean Race in 2002 and 2006.

Transat à Deux 2025

Above you see a single-handed sailor semi-foiling his Beneteau Figaro III to the horizon. It is in fact Ireland’s Sailor of the Year and the overall winner of last year’s Solitaire du Figaro, Tom Dolan. Somehow, we got our hands on a polar for the Class, and rather than trying to surreptitiously track Tom and his mates in the 2025 edition of the Solitaire, sailing rather-short, single-handed legs across the Celtic Sea and Biscay, we thought we’d see how our virtual craft would fare on the Class’s double-handed 3900nm Trans-Atlantic, from somewhere in Brittanny to somewhere in the Caribbean via somewhere in the Canaries. Allez, mes braves!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau

You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!
