FELICIDADES rafa!!! GRATTIS Mega30!! CONGRATULATIONS MustangMark!

This was the fifth running of this course, and the fourth running of it as Mistli's (birthday) BBQ race and as ever this proved to be a fun mix of Seacarts, SLIs (sneaky little islands of the Swedish Archipelago) and tough competition. The winds were the kindest they have ever been with the winner knocking 3.5hrs off the previous best time.

This was a super-tight competition and the podium are to be commended on grabbing the top spots - with almost 50 boats arriving in the first 10 minutes! BRAVO guys!!

Here are three Race Reports on the race itself from two podium winners

Mega30

MustangMark

and from

CG

who has raced in every Mistli race since SOL began!

Thank you very much for these individual reports - Sailonline hopes to encourage many of you to contribute race reports from now on!

Report from Mega30 - who took 2nd on the podium

This was a sailing that really demanded full concentration. Stockholm archipelago does that too, but it really is quieter and more comfortable in an archipelago cruiser. And you can find many "own" islands in the outer archipelago, because it is permissible for anyone to go ashore, especially on all the islands without houses. A few areas have bird protection but they have a little yellow plaque.

I tried to minimize the number of gybes with this boat since performance loss is so high. I am particularly pleased with my second place as my home waters are around the area Sandhamn - Bullerö - Nämndö in the summer time.

MustangMark took 3rd on the podium

The 4th (??) running of Mistli's Birthday BBQ race was completed in a record time by most of the fleet. Great fun was had in chat as SOLers assisted Mistli in celebrating her Birthday.

Right from the Start gun the fleet took different routes around an island filled course. However by the 1st mark there was little between the inside and outside options with Kroppyer heading the fleet. He continued this to the second mark as again the fleet seemed to take as many routes as there were islands.

The final leg saw a choice face the lead boats - inside through the maze of islands or outside for a clearer route. Eventually the island dodger route run out but again the fleet took many varied paths between them. The fact that the top 6 boats were only separated by 26 seconds and none appear to have taken the same race says a lot about this great race.

MISTLI’S BIRTHDAY RACE 2013: SADLER’S CHALLENGE

..... could he do it again? Could he be the Vettell of the SOL World?

Mistli’s Birthday Race 2013 started at 1200 UTC on Sunday 3 November. Spirits were high in the Swedish archipelago, and the winds were fair, but no-one was looking forward to the performance losses of the dear old Seacart (aka Horse and Cart)

We had a flying start!!! The first barbecue happened within ten minutes (not mentioning names!) but her position went from 10 to 54 and didn’t really recover ...

The friendly banter was enthusiastic as always, and was even more interesting because Ber Baggus was running in the NY Marathon so we were tracking him on line too!

20 miles to go, and SadlerSailing took the lead! It looked like he really was going to make it three in a row!!!

Sadly not After Oja, the fleet split .... the group who went right had the advantage. The group who went left fell behind slightly.

Still – Rafa, Mega30 and MustangMark took the podium! Congratulations guys!! Sadler came in at a very respectable 16th place. Next year Sadler, next year mate....

And thanks to the race organisers, and to Mistli for sharing her birthday with us
